Kvarnby Folk High School
Uppdaterad 100222
In 1987, a group of enthusiasts turned an old village school in the outskirts of Malmö into a venue of democratic, self-controlled popular education. The new school was Malmö's first Folk High School, sponsored by the Left Party Communists (Vänsterpartiet kommunisterna) and affiliated with Bona Folk High School in Motala.
From the beginning, our main target group were citizens of Malmö who hadn't had the possibility to take any high school grades due to bad experiences with the educational system, or a lack of opportunity to study at high-school in earlier years. In 1991, Kvarnby Folk High School became an independent folk high school, and soon an established institution of progressive adult and popular education.
Since then, we are co-operating with the local authorities, e.g. when it comes to offer an alternative educational environment for teenaged students of municipal schools, and with a large number of local initiatives and organizations.
Many of our regular co-operation partners have joined Kvarnby Folk High School Associates and, thus, became our owners. Therefore, Kvarnby Folk High School is closely linked to many NGO:s from Malmö and Scania. Most of these are local and regional bransches of the Left Party of Sweden (Vänsterpartiet) and its youth league. In addition, an increasing number of solidarity organizations, feminist and environmental groups are supporting us.
Today, Kvarnby Folk High School has about 160 adult students who are studying at two venues; right out of town in Kvarnby village, and in downtown Malmö. Most of our students are attaining their A-levels at our school, studying here between 1 and 4 years.
In addition, our school houses Malmö Comic School, Sweden's center for the education of comic drawers and author's, and a political activist academy. Kvarnby Folk High School is even the base of The Academy of the Left, a center for e-studies in political theory and practice for the broad Swedish left.
Kvarnby Folk High School is actively participating in the European Social Forum process, and we are engaged in the Nordic Association for Socialist Popular Education (NSFOF).
All these activities, and the fact that students, teachers, staff and our partners are continuously developing our school in close inter-action, turn Kvarnby Folk High School into a rather special school - for ordinary people. In short, we are a school dedicated to popular education for changing the world.
